"Using Your Pain to Help Others" with Pastor Rick Warren

Hi, my brother and sister stroke survivors,

This morning, I listened to Pastor Rick’s sermon. His words hit me hard, deep in my soul, because I realized something profound: the deepest pain in our lives isn’t just any pain—it’s our stroke.

As you listen to this sermon, I invite you to do what I did—every time Pastor Rick says “pain,” let it echo in your heart as “stroke.” It changes everything.

For the past ten years, I’ve walked alongside our incredible stroke survivor community. I’ve sat online with many of you, heard your voices of hopelessness, as you’ve whispered, “I have no purpose anymore. My stroke stole it all.”

I’ve been there too—lost in that suffocating darkness, wondering why I’m still here. But today, I’m begging you to hear me: your purpose isn’t gone. It’s hidden in the very thing you might want to run from—your stroke.

Pastor Rick’s biblical teaching stirred something in me, and I hope it stirs you too. When he talks about pain, swap it for stroke in your mind, just like I did. Let it sink in. I promise you this: our purpose after stroke isn’t found in spite of our pain—it’s found because of it.

I know this in my bones—no one, and I mean no one, can reach into the pitch-black despair of stroke recovery and pull someone out like you can. You, who’ve felt the weight of it. You, who’ve fought through the nights when giving up seemed easier. You’re the light for someone else because you’ve been through the dark.

So today, I’m not just asking—I’m pleading with you: don’t hide from your stroke pain. Don’t shove it down or pretend it’s not there. Lift it up. Lay it at God’s feet and ask Him, with all your heart, to use it. To use you. Because there’s someone out there drowning in their own stroke story, and you might be the only one who can throw them a lifeline.
