Her Story,

It was just a normal day — eating breakfast with my friends and hanging out after work. Suddenly I didn’t feel so good. I had a headache and felt dizzy. I then went to the bathroom and vomited twice, and was incontinent. I knew it was different and dangerous. The last sign was that I couldn’t see from my right eye. I then told my friend to call Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation (ERUF).

I had a stroke. The stroke was due to Congenital AV Malformation.

On the day of my stroke, I was 30 years old, 210 lbs, a height of 5’1”, and my blood pressure hit 250 mmHg.

I’ve been taking Blood Pressure and Blood Sugar medications before then but I wasn’t consistent. I’ve always been fat as a kid and I would eat anything and everything especially chips, candies and chocolate. I didn’t exercise and I didn’t see the need to do that.

A few things about me, I’m a Nurse and I worked nights for a BPO company based in USA. Since I had a flexi-time, I had more time to hang out and eat.

Basically, I didn’t take care of myself. I started smoking, drinking alcohol on the weekends, and didn’t exercise at all.

Because of my stroke, I had Conduction Aphasia. It was hard for me because I had to start from scratch — ABC’s, Reading, Writing and I needed Speech Therapy. I couldn’t say my parents’ names neither could I say my own!

I also needed Occupational Therapy because my right hand paresis and I had Hemi-spatial Visual Neglect on the right side.

After my stroke, I decided to change my life and be a better version of myself. I have lost 62 lbs on Keto and Intermittent Fasting; and I have lost a total of 82 lbs since the stroke. I no longer have Aphasia after 8 months of weekly Speech Therapy. I have restored the function of my right fingers and I can now see colors in my right field of vision.

Now, I exercise — I Box and do Crossfit and I love it! My stroke was the hardest thing I’ve been through and it’s also the greatest thing that happened to me! I am a Miracle! And I am so excited for what the future holds. My stroke made me realize that in life, only 3 things are needed: Faith, Hope and Love.
